Policy
Safeguarding responsibilities for Governors of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are critical to the establishment of a safe learning and working environment. However, recent cases have highlighted the significant lack of guidance for those responsible for the governance of HEIs.
This briefing for university governors provides an overview of legal responsibilities, institutional policies, and best practices to ensure student safety. It covers key risks such as abuse, radicalisation, and mental health concerns while emphasising the importance of governance oversight, reporting procedures, and compliance with regulations like the Prevent Duty and GDPR. By fostering a proactive safeguarding culture, governors can support senior leadership, challenge inadequate practices, and help create a safer university environment.
